What is SEO?

Understanding the Basics of SEO and Search Engines

Understanding SEO can be daunting at first. It’s the ever-changing practice of optimizing your website to enhance and increase its visibility on search engine result pages (SERPs). Search engines such as Google or Bing want to highlight websites they find credible and authoritative. They need to know which websites have valuable information and which ones don’t.

How Many Web Pages are on The Web?

As of 2024, there are over 5 billion indexed web pages. Indexed means pages that search engines have access to. This means that Google and Bing are sorting through 5 billion web pages to find which pages have the most valuable information to show.

Therefore, our job as website owners is to tell search engines why our website is more valuable than our competitors. We do this by following the best SEO practices, providing relevant and unique content, and answering questions people ask on Google.

What Search Engines Look For

Search engines seek websites and web pages that provide relevant and unique content to display when users Google anything. Think about the last time that you Googled:

  • A Recipe for Lemon and Herb Chicken
  • How to Change the Oil in Your Car
  • What is the Best Cappuccino in your City
  • How Long Does it Take to Drive to Austin, Texas
  • Why is the Sky Blue
  • Do Aliens Exist? (They do.)

Do you remember the results Google showed you? Most likely not, but that is beside the point.

Why does Google show us the results in the order that they do? The results that Google displays are a hierarchy of what Google finds to be the most credible and authoritative.

SEO is the practice of making our content valuable so Google knows to show our Lemon and Herb Chicken recipe over the many other recipes out there.

Ultimately, the goal of SEO is to prove our authority and attract more organic (non-paid) traffic to our website. We can do this by following SEO practices already laid out for us.

Keyword Research

In SEO, keywords are specific words and phrases that users enter into search engines. They help search engines understand webpage content and match it to relevant queries. There are different types of keywords:

  • Short-tail Keywords: Broad terms like “Yoga”
  • Long-tail Keywords: Longer terms like “Best Yoga Mat for Beginners”

Our job is to make it obvious to Google that we are a business that sells yoga mats and equipment and we can do this by including these keywords within our website or blog. Once we have our keywords, we can implement them during our On-Page SEO practice.

On-Page SEO

The content that appears on your website, blog, or business is related to your On-Page SEO.

For example, optimizing the hierarchy of heading tags (H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, H6) is vital because Google crawls our web page from top to bottom. Our job is to tell Google exactly what our page is about through proper structure and format.

Another On-Page SEO practice is optimizing our content to include relevant keywords that give substance to our content. If you write an article about “The Best Running Shoes of 2024” but only talk about your recent trek in Peru, Google won’t know you are trying to reach an audience looking to decide what new running shoes to buy.

Optimizing your On-Page SEO is one of the first steps in developing a strong SEO strategy because Google wants to see concise websites and web pages that answer specific questions and keep people engaged longer.

Technical SEO

Technical SEO is about the user's experience on our website. If our website is slow or isn’t responsive on mobile and tablet, there is a higher chance people will leave your website before they’ve had time to find any answers or information.

The average human attention span is now 8.5 seconds. That’s less than a goldfish, yikes. If we discover a high bounce rate on our website, Google finds that people leave our website quickly. This negatively impacts our authority because it tells Google “People don’t want this information” even if our content is valuable.

Off-Page SEO

When it comes to building trust and authority, backlinks are crucial for Off-Page SEO and overall SEO strategy success. Backlinks are created when another website links to your content because they find it valuable. Earning these links requires unique and helpful content. Building backlinks involves reaching out to other websites and asking them to link to your site. This process takes time, and you'll likely face rejections, but persistence is key.

Local SEO

Local SEO is easier to rank for solely because of the lack of competition in your area. If you live in a larger city, your task will be greater than if you were living in a small town. Using tools like customer reviews, you can develop authority within your area.

Adaptation to Algorithmic Changes

Search engine algorithms are in a perpetual state of refinement. In 2024, search engines like Google continue to update their algorithms to deliver more relevant and valuable results to users.

An effective SEO strategy entails staying on top of these algorithmic changes and adapting accordingly. By aligning with search engine guidelines and best practices, businesses can maintain their visibility and rankings in search results, ensuring continued organic traffic to their websites.

Enhanced User Experience

User experience (UX) has emerged as a pivotal factor in determining search engine rankings. In 2024, search engines prioritize websites that offer seamless navigation, fast loading times, mobile responsiveness, and high-quality content.

A well-executed SEO strategy encompasses optimizing these aspects to deliver an exceptional user experience, thereby fostering higher engagement, lower bounce rates, and increased conversions.

Targeted Content Marketing

Content remains king in the digital landscape, and an effective SEO strategy revolves around creating and distributing relevant, high-quality content tailored to the needs and interests of the target audience.

In 2024, businesses are leveraging content marketing not only to improve search engine visibility but also to establish thought leadership, build brand credibility, and foster customer relationships. By incorporating targeted keywords and addressing user queries, businesses can attract qualified traffic and nurture leads through their sales funnel.

Amplifying Local Visibility

Local search optimization has become indispensable for businesses with a physical presence, such as brick-and-mortar stores, restaurants, and service providers. In 2024, consumers increasingly rely on search engines to discover local businesses and make purchase decisions.

A robust SEO strategy incorporates tactics such as optimizing Google My Business listings, acquiring local citations, and garnering positive reviews to enhance local visibility and attract nearby customers.

Competitive Edge in a Crowded Market

Remember, there are 5 billion indexed pages in Google. Within an increasingly competitive digital landscape, an effective SEO strategy can provide businesses with a crucial edge over their competitors.

By outranking competitors in search engine results pages (SERPs) for relevant keywords, businesses can capture the attention of potential customers, drive website traffic, and ultimately, gain a larger share of the market. Additionally, investing in SEO enables businesses to build sustainable visibility and authority in their respective industries, reinforcing their competitive position over the long term.

In Conclusion

As we navigate the digital landscape of 2024, the importance of a well-crafted SEO strategy cannot be overstated. From adapting to algorithmic changes and enhancing user experience to leveraging targeted content marketing and amplifying local visibility, SEO remains indispensable for businesses aiming to thrive online.

By prioritizing SEO efforts and staying abreast of emerging trends and best practices, businesses can strengthen their online presence, attract qualified leads, and drive sustainable growth in the competitive digital arena.
